From the jungle to the market: how Colombian Amazonian bio-businesses are scaling up.
In the heart of the Colombian Amazon, "El Camino de la Pantera" is flourishing—an initiative by Pantera Makers, supported by BID Lab, that incubates and accelerates bio-businesses: ventures that transform Amazonian knowledge and resources into value-added products without sacrificing the ecosystem.
The figures are impressive: out of 721 applications, the program selected 138 bio-businesses across two cohorts—84 for pre-incubation and 54 for incubation—evaluated using the rigorous Sabiscore model. Yet, one statistic reveals something deeper: 85% of the registrations came through personalized, facilitating channels—WhatsApp, word-of-mouth, and signals from trust networks deeply rooted in the region.
The program encompasses three distinct stages: Germination for nascent ideas, Expansion for ongoing businesses seeking growth, and Rooting for those with strong roots looking to scale. At its core lies an explicit commitment: female leadership as a driving force for sustainable development in the Amazon.
The result? Bio-businesses with a distinct territorial identity, value propositions built on biodiversity, and a community that is rewriting the relationship between the rainforest and prosperity. Discover all the findings in the full report.
